South England Road Trip Part 2: Wandering through Bath

After a long day visiting the sites of prehistoric Britian, it was time to get a little more modern…working our way from the Romans to the modern day Baths in one of the UK’s most beautiful cities.

After a leisurely breakfast, we started our day with the Mayor of Bath’s Guide tour.  It’s free, and no tips are expected or accepted by the guides, who are enthusiastic volunteers. We wandered around the city, learning the reasoning behind the famous Crescent and Circus, and the major players who made the city what it is today. I’d definitely recommend it for the orientation of the city and a bit of understanding about the architecture.

We stopped for a  quick lunch before heading to the Roman Baths, a must see in the city.  They’re worth waiting in line for, there’s lots to see and the exhibits are well presented. And, really, it’s the most important part of Bath. It’s amazing how well the Roman baths have survived, down to the original lead lining of the large bath.

We followed our tour of the Baths with a delicious snack, then decided to head to the Thermae Bath Spa for some relaxation before dinner. The spa is nice, but it’s expensive, and unless you’ve booked a treatment or show up early, it’s likely you’ll be queuing to get in.  The rooftop pool has excellent views of the city and it’s a good way to relax, but I found it a bit overpriced for what you got. If you book in advance, some deals are available.

After relaxing for a few hours, we headed to Joya for dinner and enjoyed some delicious pasta and wine. Overall, an excellent day in the city of Bath.
