St Lucia is for Lovers

Mostly honeymooners. And nature lovers.

We spent a long time deciding on where to take our honeymoon. After so many action packed weekend trips around Europe, we wanted something different and relaxing after the stress of the wedding. We vascillared between the Caribbean islands and Central America, contemplated all inclusive resorts and tiny private retreats until we found a middle ground.
St. Lucia is a tropical island in the southern Caribbean that went back and forth from French to English colony and finally, in the late 70’s achieved independence.  It’s famous for it’s rainforest and volcano and the UNESCO World heritage site Piton mountains.

We ended up at the eco resort Ti Kaye on St Lucia. It’s a tiny resort, only about 30 rooms (which are really cabins), but all the amenities you need for a beach holiday. We spent the week eating lots of fish and fresh fruit, laying in sun loungers on the beach and exploring the island. The only down side is the 170 or so stairs down the cliff to the beach. Not the worst thing though, since all beaches in St Lucia are public and having one that’s difficult to access means it’s much less crowded.

Our biggest adventure was climbing Gros Piton, a 2600 foot mountain that overlooks the ocean and it’s twin peak Petit Piton. You’re required to hire a guide from park to take you up, but the hike is fairly straightforward, just long and hot. Beautiful views though, and our taxi driver took us to a local restaurant in Soufriere where we tried dasheen, curried chicken and other local foods.

We also visited the Capital, Castries, and saw a cathedral painted by the man who designed the St. Lucian flag and stopped by the worlds only drive in volcano. (It’s not as exciting as it sounds).

Though it’s a small island, the roads are winding and mountainous so it takes ages to get anywhere. It’s beautiful though and was an unforgettable honeymoon!

    1. Haha fortunately we only had to go up and down them once a day, they had a beach bar and restaurant. But it was a bit of a workout.

We went to Ti Kaye!! I loved it there – I really liked the style of the cabins and that restaurant was gorgeous for breakfast and evening meals. It was by far my favourite of the three hotels we stayed at in St Lucia. Thanks for sharing with us on #FarawayFiles

I’ve always steered clear of the Caribbean because of the dominance of all-inclusive and private beaches, I didn’t realise St Lucia was so different. It looks really gorgeous. Glad you had a relaxing honeymoon.

    1. I think where you stay makes a big difference. There are huge all inclusive resorts on St. Lucia, but there are other options as well. It’s not nearly as built up as some of the other islands, which we appreciated.
