Underneath the Train Tracks: A Craft Beer Tour of Manchester

Note: Do not attempt this the night before a 7 am flight like we did.

Ever since I’d heard of Cloudwater Brewing, I loved their beer. They make amazing NE style IPA’s and their beer clearly doesn’t disappoint others either- they were ranked the second best brewery in the world this year! What I didn’t know was that Manchester has OTHER amazing craft beer venues and breweries as well.

Port Street Beer House: Admittedly a bit expensive, this bar is large and hosts plenty of tap takeovers and other beer related events in the Northern Quarter. We visited during a Garage (Barcelona based) tap takeover and it did not disappoint.

Beer Moth: Although we first accidentally went to the bottle shop, this was where our adventure really began. This brewpub has collaborated with a lot of our favourite breweries, including Garage and Cloudwater. We went during their anniversary party- where all the collabs were on tap. The food was tasty and so was the beer. A bit of a strange location near a shopping centre, but worth the trek.

It was in Beermoth that we sat across from a couple that introduced us to the next few stops on our list, and made our night way more adventurous than we had planned!

We knew Cloudwater Tap room was located below the train tracks in an archway near picadilly station. What we didn’t know was that two other great breweries and a food hall weren’t far away!Alphabet Brewing Company: In an unheated underpass below the train tracks is some delicious beer. I’d heard of the Flat White beer before, but what you really need to try is the Juice Springsteen. Delicious. A bit cold to visit at night in the winter…but the beer kept us warm.

Track Brewing Co.: Another basic tap room below the train tracks (this one had heatlamps though, yay!). What to try? El Capitan if you like IPA’s!

Does it get any better?

A few archways down, on Friday and Saturday nights, the GRUB food fair takes place. With street food vendors of all types and an excellent list of beer, we couldn’t believe we’d never heard of it before. It changes from week to week but seems to be consistently delicious!

Then of course, the grand finale is the Cloudwater Barrel Store Tap room.  If you haven’t been here yet and you like beer, it’s a must see. I struggle to choose a favourite beer!
