British Foods You Need to Eat!

I know that the UK is not known for culinary arts, and that a lot of menus involve stewed/mushy vegetables, but there are a few things that really make up for all that.

Sticky Toffee Pudding

I’ll start the list off with my personal favorite. A moist, spicy cake covered in delicious toffee sauce. It is SO GOOD. I could eat it every day and not get sick of it. I think. The best I have had is the Cartmel Sticky Toffee, and they claim to be the originators.

Fish and Chips
Get yourself to a chippy ASAP. These aren’t the same as fish and chips in New England, for starters, they leave the skin on, and they are eaten with salt and vinegar instead of lemon. Equally good, but different.

Savoury Pies
Meat and potato. Steak and ale. Chicken and rosemary. You get the idea. It is all in the crust, so make sure it isn’t a microwaved one. I am not sure why these aren’t popular in the U.S., but they should be.

Yorkshire Pudding
The name is very deceiving. This is not a pudding, nor is it a dessert. It is a hybrid between a crescent roll and a muffin served with Sunday roast, often covered in gravy. And it is delicious.

Mince Pies
It tastes like Christmas in a pie. Raisins, spices, nuts. And usually decorated very nicely. Heated up with a little brandy cream… What more could you want?

What local cuisine would you insist that visitors try?

Sticky toffee pudding is the most amazing thing on earth! I love it with custard too…why does this not exist abroad? 😦

    1. Yes! And all you have to do is put them in the oven. Although I have found that the tesco store brand isn’t very good. The Cartmel brand is much better.

I agree with you! I love Yorkshire pudding – had it for the first time when I visited London. Oh and I love the traditional English breakfast too!

    1. Yes, an English breakfast is always good! I am still getting used to the “back bacon” here though instead of the American “streaky bacon”

Curry chips, the best food on earth. Also full English breakfast, with extra breakfast. (I have to admit that I stole that last bit from some movie/TV show/comedian…I don’t remember where.)

      1. If you go on your wordpress menu, you can in the menu “customize” and you can change the header from there

Very good list 😀 I’m also a big fan of the classic tea with burbon biscuits, or cream tea biscuits, or any kind of biscuit, really!
